Talking Tattoos

Talking Tattoos

Tattoos have long been considered a visual medium and a way for people to express themselves but thanks to new trending technology they could soon allow you to add an extra dimension to your body art. Local tech blogger Kevin Andrews is with us this morning to discuss how our tattoos can come to life and be played back to us.

Los Angeles-based body artist company called “Skin Motion” seems to have come up with an ingenious idea of taking an audio recording you supply to them via an app they have designed and from there they generate the audio waveform of your recording. This waveform resembles a line that tends to fan out and it will be this waveform that gets permanently tattooed onto your skin. And so, anytime you want to hear this sound you use their app on your phone which will scan the tattoo and play it back to you – much like you can you your phone with a QR code.

It seems to be a personal choice but many people get a waveform tattoo of their kids talking or animals or a short clip of their favorite song. Though, when it comes to music clips copyright is an issue and so they have to pay royalties or a license for music clips they tattoo into people. So, I’m sure that would reflect in the cost of the tattoo.

Well, because you have to scan the tattoo with your phone and because the tattoo is on your body it might come down to where it is on your body in relation to how far back you can hold your phone out to scan it. Most people seem to get a tattoo that is a 5-20 seconds long. And so the trend now is to tattoo a short clip of a close family member laughing or saying something onto their body, so they can have something tangible, in the form of a tattoo, to remember them by.
